The enucleation specimen in (A) shows a diffuse melanoma infiltrating the choroid and ciliary body. In the center, a large area of necrosis and hemorrhage is present (*) and the retina is infiltrated (arrows). Note hypopyon in the anterior chamber and the cataractous lens.

  • Amelanotic Mushroom-Shaped Choroidal Melanoma

May 18 2020 by McGill University Health Centre

The enucleation specimen in (B) shows an amelanotic, mushroom-shaped, slightly hemorrhagic tumor near the optic nerve (arrow). The shape is due to infiltration of the retina by a rupture of the Bruch membrane. A retinal detachment artifact is present.

  • Amelanotic Choroidal Melanoma

May 18 2020 by McGill University Health Centre

The enucleation specimen in (A) shows an amelanotic, mushroom-shaped tumor arising from the choroid. Microhemorrhages are present within the tumor and also surround the tumor base (arrow). True retinal detachment is present (arrowhead). The subretinal fluid is mixed: clear (1), hemorrhagic (2), and fibrinoid (3).

  • Slide 14-8

Mar 14 2019 by Lancaster Course in Ophthalmology

Among the objective manifestations of a choroidal melanoma, the most important is the presence of a solid mass seen on ophthaloscopic presentation. (seen in Slides 14-1 to 14-13). The shape and projection of the tumor can be best appreciated by observation with the indirect ophthalmoscope. The appearance of these tumors is typically that of a mushroom-shaped, collar button-shaped mass.

  • Ultrasonographic Evidence of a Mushroom-Shaped Choroidal Metastasis Left Eye

Sep 3 2015 by María José Marroquín Sarti

A 62-year-old woman complained of visual field loss and decreasing vision. Twenty years earlier, breast cancer was diagnosed and treated with chemotherapy and right mastectomy, four years ago, she had another treatment whith chemotherapy and resection of another tumor that started to grow in the same side. Serous retinal detachment and choroidal masses were present in both eyes.
