"Black sunburst" sign of sickle-cell retinopathy. These are localized leĀsions characterized by hypertrophy, hyperplasia, and migration of the retinal pigment epithelium into the retina in a perivascular location. This latter has given the lesion its spiculate ophthalmoscopic and gross appearance.
