Thomas A. Ciulla, MD, MBA, FASRS » Multiple Evanescent White Dot Syndrome

An 18 year old woman noted a 5 day history of a new blind spot and metamorphopsia OD. She originally thought she was having a migraine. On exam, she was noted to have multiple "white dots" OD. She was found to have an enlarged blind spot OD on visual field testing and referred for retina consultation. MEWDS most often occurs in young myopic females. This condition is usually unilateral, although bilateral cases have been reported. Blurred vision, photopsias and temporal scotoma are all consistent with MEWDS. This condition may be associated with an enlarged blind spot, and usually resolves spontaneously.
