These 11 year old identical twin boys were noted to have nystagmus "almost since birth" by their parents. The children were otherwise felt to be normal. However, they were subsequently demonstrated to have "stable, binaural moderate to moderately severe sensorineural hearing deficit on audiology testing." There are no other neurologic or systemic abnormalities, despite a thorough work-up for diseases that might be associated iwth retinitis pigmentosa and other such degenerative diseases or entities in differential diagnosis.
The unusual features include the relatively early onset, i.e., documented retinal abnormalities by the age of six, and congenital dystagmus; a relative lack of progression in a pigmentary degeneration that was advanced at age six but has not shown significant progression by age eleven, and the only systemic finding of note relates to the binaural hearing deficit.
