A 34 year old high myope with cleft palate developed an expulsive hemorrhage during extracapsular cataract extraction performed on his only functioning eye in 1960. Four diathermy operations were necessary to repair recurrent retinal detachments occurring over the next two and one-half years. A resultant visual acuity of 20/20 was recorded.
On September 1, 1982, twenty years after the cataract extraction, a retinal detachment developed in the posterior pole in association with a macular hole. (See photo) The visual acuity was 20/80.
